FAQs
I've never had a massage before. What will it be like?
Your massage will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music will be played to help you relax. You will lie on a padded table designed for comfort and stability. You will be properly draped at all times and I will only uncover the area being massaged.
I will begin with long, flowing strokes, which help calm your nervous system and release superficial muscle tension. I will use lotion or oil to nourish your skin. As you relax, I will gradually use more pressure to target and relieve specific areas of muscular tension. Let me know if you are in any discomfort so that I can adjust my technique accordingly. It is important to me that your massage be pleasant and therapeutic.
Are there different kinds of massage?
Yes, there are many different kinds. The kinds of massage I offer are: Swedish, Deep Tissue, Sports, Aromatherapy and Seated. For a description of these, click here for my Services page.
Do I have to take my clothes off?
No, but most traditional massage techniques are performed with the client unclothed. However, it is important that you feel safe and comfortable, so undress to your personal comfort level. Keep in mind that you will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be uncovered. All private parts are always covered, and never touched.
I will leave the room before and after the session to allow you privacy while you change your clothes.
I'm ticklish/don't like having my feet touched. Can I still get a massage?
Yes. Just let me know if there is any part of the body you don't want massaged, and I'll skip that area.
What do I have to do?
Nothing, really. Just relax, let go, and enjoy the massage. Many clients like to close their eyes, listen to the music, and completely relax— others like to chat. It is your massage and whatever feels natural and comfortable to you is best. I will either gently move you (such as lifting your arm) or tell you what is needed throughout the session. Feel free to ask questions at any time, I'm happy to answer them.
What if I fall asleep?
It's perfectly fine. Many people find that the combination of warmth and tension release relaxes them to sleep. This is especially true if your day includes long hours and/or taking care of others. You will receive the therapeutic benefits of massage whether awake or asleep.
How will I feel afterward?
Most people feel very relaxed and peaceful. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy and greater productivity that can last several days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended that you drink plenty of water following your massage.
My chiropractor/physical therapist massages me. How is this different?
Therapeutic massage is of longer duration (an hour versus a few minutes) and the intent is different. The chiropractor uses a short massage to relax the body for a bone adjustment. Massage therapists provide full body massage and focus on soft tissue like muscles.
Additionally, in New York, all Licensed Massage Therapists receive a minimum of 1,000 hours of instruction. They are also required to perform extensive clinical training before being eligible for licensure. In contrast, most chiropractors and physical therapists typically receive fewer than 100 hours of massage training.
Can I bring my own music?
Absolutely. I have a selection of peaceful music that I usually play during a session, but you are welcome to bring anything that will make your experience more enjoyable.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes. If you feel more comfortable bringing another person with you, that's perfectly fine.
How long are sessions and how much do they cost?
The average full-body massage lasts approximately one hour. A half-hour session allows me to concentrate on a problem area, such as the back and neck. Many people prefer a 60- to 90-minute session for optimal relaxation. For more details, click here for my Rates & Scheduling page.
Are there times when I shouldn't receive a massage?
Yes. That's why it's essential that I ask you some general health questions before we begin a session. It's important that I know about any health problems you may have or medications you are taking because there are some conditions for which massage is not advisable. Under New York State law, all personal and medical information you provide is held in strict confidence.
I have more questions. Where can I get answers?
